WTGA History

1916 – 1923

Records of the early years are incomplete, but from 1916 through 1923, the Executive Committee, as it was referred to, was comprised of host clubs only. There was no record of Annual Dues and the entry fee was $2 for the tournament. The tournament referred to is now called the State Amateur Championship. The qualifying scores ranged from 87-120.

1916

  • The First President was Mrs. I. H. (Belle) Burney
  • State Amateur was held at River Crest C.C., May 9-12th
  • Total of 78 contestants on qualifying day, but only 24 competed in Match Play. Three flights with 8 players in each

1917

  • President-Miss Laura Rice
  • State Amateur was at Houston C.C., April 24-28
  • Total of 69 contestants on qualifying day but only 56 competed in the Match Play. 3 Flights had 16 Players and a 4th flight had 8

1918

  • No Tournaments or active board due to the War

1919

  • President-Edna Lapham
  • State Amateur held at San Antonio C.C.
  • 42 Contestants on qualifying day, but 40 competed in the match play. 2 flights with 16 and a third flight had 8

1920

  • President -Either Mrs. Theo S. (Rita) Deforest or Miss Willie Sterett
  • State Amateur held at Dallas C.C., May 4-8
  • 56 competed. 3 flights with 16 and a 4th had 8

1921

  • President-Mrs. John Dickson
  • State Amateur was at Houston C.C., April 26-30
  • 68 competed. 4 flights with 16

1922

  • President-Mrs. R. Ellison (Merle) Harding
  • State Am was held at River Crest CC on October 17-21. Original date was April 25-29, but it had to be postponed due to floods
  • 40 contestants competed. 16 in two flights and a third had 8
  • A Secretary was added, Mrs. J.W. Hamilton

1923

  • President-Mrs. F.M. Lewis
  • State Am was held at San Antonio C.C.
  • Total of 55 contestants. 3 flights of 16. 3 players played in a 54 hole medal play and 4 players in a “Baby Flight”
